Do You Use Porn?

221 women and 501 men have answered

Take the survey

 porn1

  • 61% of men choose to look at porn at least once in the last 60 days.
  • 31% of women choose to look at porn at least once in the last 60 days.
  • The above numbers are consistent with other surveys.
  • 21% of men used porn more than once a week.
  • 7% of women used porn more than once a week.
  • The number for use more than once a week are lower than for most surveys I have seen.
  • Among women, heavy porn use (more than once a week) was far more common in the 20’s (12%) but non-use was also high in this age (72%). In the 30’s and 40’s moderate use was more common than for other ages, and non-use was less common. In the oldest age group non-use was very high (82%).
  • Among men non-use was highest in the 20’s, and went down steadily by age:
    • 20’s 50%
    • 30’s 46%
    • 40’s 34%
    • 50 + 30%
    • Male use more than once a week went up by age: 17%, 18%, 23%, 26% across the four age ranges. “Almost daily use” also went up by each age group: 0%, 4%, 5% 7%.

Does your spouse know you look at porn?

  • For women who do use porn, 36% say their husband is fully aware, and another 10% say he knows, but does not know how much they use porn. Thirty percent think he has no idea.
  • Among men who use porn, 13% say their wife knows, and 16% say she knows but does not know how much. Eighteen percent say she suspects,13% don’t know if she knows, and 32% think she has no idea.

How does your spouse feel about your porn use - or how would they feel if they knew?

  • Among women, 45% say he is or would be fine with it, 15% say he does or would dislike it, and 13% say he is or would be very upset.
  • For the men, 10% say she is or would be fine with it, 30% say she does or would dislike it, and 48% say she is/would be very upset.

Note: This question was only asked of those who are choosing to use porn.

  • Thirty-two percent of men said their porn use is “under control”. However, 40% of those men said it is also endangering their spiritual walk, 12% said it is hurting their sex life, 10% said it is hurting their marriage, and 2% said it endangers their job. So what does “under control” mean to these men?
  • Twenty –one percent of women, and 13% of men use porn to get aroused. Three percent of women and about 1% of men say they need porn to get aroused – and a couple of men added in the comments that their porn use makes is difficult to climax with their wife.
  • A very few women  - 1.6%, and fewer men – 1.1% - say they cannot climax without porn.

Note: This question was asked of all who took the survey.

  • Slightly more than 2 in 3 men and women think porn use is always sin.
  • Fifty-six percent of men and 59% of women think porn distorts sexuality. This means 44% of men and 41% of women do not think porn distorts sexuality!
  • Six percent of men and eight percent of women think is it okay to watch porn as a couple.

While we not looking at married couples here, it is interesting, compare these answers to the numbers of men and women who said they look at porn.

  • 38% of men did not look at porn in the last 60 days, but 65% of women think their husband did not look at porn.
  • 69% of women did not use porn, but 84% of men think their wife is not using porn.
  • 23% of women know their husband uses porn, and the majority of those women hate it.
  • 7% of men know their wife uses porn, but none of them hate that use.

Comments:

  • A fair number of men and women made it clear their porn was primarily with their spouse. However, only 7% of the women and 2% of men said they only looked at porn with their spouse.
  • A number of men (just over 10%), and a couple of women, say their spouse’s sexual refusal is a contributing factor.  Several men said it is the only thing keeping them from divorce, and two said it was keeping them from committing adultery. And yes, most of these also admit their porn use is wrong.
    • “Has kept me married in dry times. I no longer judge those who are in or view porn”
    • “Provides an unsatisfactory release which allows me to live with a refuser”.
    • Some men indicate they know they use porn when they are depressed, disappointed or under pressure.
    • Several men indicated their wife knows they use porn but pretends they do not know, or ignores it. This was attributed to their wife not wanting to be sexual.
    • Eight percent of women and 16% of men say their porn use is out of control.
    • Several women said they use porn to help them be more sexual with their husband.
    • A couple of men confessed to their wife looking for help, but she was unwilling to discuss it or get involved.
    • Almost a quarter of women, but only 9% of men think porn is helping their sex life. Fifteen percent of women and 22% of men think porn is hurting their sex life.
    • Ten percent of women and 6% of men think their porn use helps their marriage, while 13% of women and 24% of men think it is hurting their marriage.
    • Fifty one percent of men, but only 16% of women think their porn use is hurting their spiritual walk.
    • Several people suggested visual and written porn are very different, and that written is either not wrong or far less harmful.
    • A few said they take “make their own porn” with just them – or write stories about the two of them. I should have specifically excluded this in the description. Still, the few who said this are not enough to make a big change in the results.
    • “I in my life have quit methamphetamine, smoking, and heavy drinking...and quitting porn is the hardest thing I have EVER done.”
